Human Growth Hormone (HGH) is produced by the pituitary gland. Children release 2 i.u. of hgh 4-7 times per day for four to five non-consecutive days during a 2-3 week period (during growth spurts). This equal 32-70 i.u. in four to five day time frame. Compared to the 0.5-1.5 i.u. a day that adults release.

Until the 80’s the only available form Human Growth Hormone was created from the pituitary glands of dead corpses. HGH was then extracted and purified through numerous steps of costly procedures. The growth hormone was then sold by prescription for use in children who had stunted growth. In 1987 this type of human growth hormone was linked to a deadly brain disease called Creutzfeld Jakob disease, and took off of the market.

The first synthetic GH was produced by genetically altering mouse cells. Natural human growth hormone has a 191 amino acid sequence where as the first synthetic HGH had a 192 amino acid sequence. This is thought to cause the body to produce HGH anti-bodies which deactivate the injected human growth hormone. Most synthetics now contain the 191 amino acid sequence.
